Winter Northern Cardinals

March 11, 2017

More birds in snow.

This post contains photos of the male and female Northern Cardinal perched in our Butterfly Bush. All photos were taken during a daytime snow storm in our yard. The photos of the male cardinals are mostly shot through the branches of the bush. I was able to take close-up images of the females as they are less skittish than the males that visit.

Chocolate Lab in Winter light

March 5, 2017

February. Cold. Snow. Interesting mid-day light. No particular motivation to go outside.

I noticed Luke, our chocolate labrador retriever, sitting on the chair back in front of the picture window with interesting light illuminating one side of his face, so I grabbed the camera and took a few photos.

Eastern Mockingbird in the Snow

February 18, 2017

Winter has actually taken hold in upstate New York this year. In the last couple of weeks we have received more snow than all of last season's total. No surprise then when the forecast called for a moderate snow storm to hit throughout the day Sunday. With coffee at the ready, I grabbed the Canon 7D Mark II and went to find the birds.

Ice-Covered Adirondacks

February 12, 2017

Recently I traveled to Quebec for work. I decided to drive since the trip was only going to be three and a half hours in the car and this would be much quicker than flying. Having snowed the night before, the roads were clear, but the ground and surrounding hills were snow-covered. Driving north on the NY Northway in the early morning, rain was intermittent and the sky was overcast. As I reached the northern Adirondacks, the rain subsided and the clouds became interesting just as I was passing through the ice-covered rock-exposed hills. Having brought the Fuji X100s with me, I was able to capture some images as I traveled North. All images shown here were shot handheld in manual mode with auto ISO and autofocus.

2017 AIAA SciTech

January 29, 2017

I visited Grapevine, Texas January 9-13 for the annual American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) SciTech conference at the Gaylord Texan. If you are an aerospace or related STEM student or professional, I highly recommend attending SciTech to hear from decision makers, attend technical talks, and network with your colleagues from academia, government, and industry. If you want to get involved, join the AIAA and volunteer to serve in your local chapter or on a technical committee.

Pileated Woodpecker in Winter

January 25, 2017

While drinking my morning coffee on a mild Saturday in January, I happened to notice that the Pileated woodpecker had flown into our backyard and was pecking away on several trees. My luck photographing these birds has been poor at best. Not that I do not get close to them; they have landed five feet from me on several occasions ... just not when I had a camera with me! Every time I intentionally try and photograph this bird, it takes flight before I am within a couple of hundred feet of it. My one success so far basically was because I was screened by thick foliage and there is no such cover in January in upstate New York.
