Dark-Eyed Junco in Winter

Dark-Eyed Juncos in Winter

December 30, 2017

We get plenty of Dark-Eyed Juncos visiting during the Winter months. For a rather plain looking bird at a distance, they have subtle coloring upon closer inspection and they always seem to be willing to strike a pose or two. Over the past several weeks, I captured a number of images of the Juncos in the snow, falling snow, and ice.

Female Northern Cardinal in the ice

Ice Cardinals

December 23, 2017

A small snow storm moved through Northern New York on the 22nd dropping about 3 inches of snow and canceling school on the last school day of the year. We took advantage of the day-off by catching an afternoon screen of the Star Wars The Last Jedi with the kids. After arriving home, I shoveled the drive way and thankfully because over night we received about 1/8" of ice.

Ice-Covered Adirondacks

February 12, 2017

Recently I traveled to Quebec for work. I decided to drive since the trip was only going to be three and a half hours in the car and this would be much quicker than flying. Having snowed the night before, the roads were clear, but the ground and surrounding hills were snow-covered. Driving north on the NY Northway in the early morning, rain was intermittent and the sky was overcast. As I reached the northern Adirondacks, the rain subsided and the clouds became interesting just as I was passing through the ice-covered rock-exposed hills. Having brought the Fuji X100s with me, I was able to capture some images as I traveled North. All images shown here were shot handheld in manual mode with auto ISO and autofocus.

An American Robin sits on an ice-covered branch.

Frozen Dinner

January 27, 2016

An American Robin sits amidst the crab apples and ice.

An American Robin clings to an ice-covered branch on my ornamental crab apple tree during a early-Winter ice/snow storm. A large number of robins had found the fruit and were gorging themselves on it during the storm.

Photographed hand held with the Canon 7D Mark II and the Canon EF 100-400 F/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens in a light freezing rain.

Have a great day!
