A Pileated Woodpecker in backlit by mid-day sun.

Pileated Woodpecker

August 13, 2017

While walking the dog today I heard the tell-tale "knock...knock...knock" of the Pileated Woodpecker. The Pileated makes a much lower tone than a Red-Bellied or Downy woodpecker makes. I led the dog away and into the house and grabbed the camera. It took a few minutes to locate the bird, but I could not get a clear line to shoot. Working my way around through the woods, I was cognizant that there is often a second Pileated in the vicinity. Sure enough! I spotted the bird above working his way up that small tree just off my dog path. While photographing this bird, the first bird flew by, however I was never able to catch up to him.

Photographed with the Canon 7D Mark II and the Canon EF 100-400MM F/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens handheld. The photos were post-processed in Lightroom CC for exposure and crop. The black and white photo was converted in Photoshop CC using the Macphun Tonality CK plugin.

Have a great day!
