A Dark-Eyed Junco in sunlight on a cold and windy Winter morning

Juncos in the Cold

January 12, 2018

These Dark-Eyed Juncos were photographed on the same cold morning as the previous post. Again, the post processing was completed on Adobe Lightroom Mobile on the iPhone 7 Plus.

Dark-Eyed Junco in Winter

Dark-Eyed Juncos in Winter

December 30, 2017

We get plenty of Dark-Eyed Juncos visiting during the Winter months. For a rather plain looking bird at a distance, they have subtle coloring upon closer inspection and they always seem to be willing to strike a pose or two. Over the past several weeks, I captured a number of images of the Juncos in the snow, falling snow, and ice.

Northern Cardinal in snow

The Snow and Birds are Back!

December 10, 2017

The first accumulating snow fall of the 2017/2018 winter season arrived this weekend in upstate New York. In the mid-afternoon, the birds were active and visiting the feeders. I managed to take several hundred photos with the Canon 7D Mark II and the Canon EF 100-400MM F/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens as they came and went in the snow. The birds included several male and female Northern Cardinals, Dark-Eyed Juncos, American Tree Sparrows, American Goldfinches, and an occasional Blue Jay.

Dark-Eyed Junco in the Snow

April 3, 2017

Perched on a Butterfly Bush branch in an early Spring snow storm, this Dark-Eyed Junco is hunkered down waiting for his turn at the bird feeder.

Snow Birds

January 16, 2017

These images were captured on the same day I photographed the Northern Cardinals in the snow. I shot with Canon 7D Mark II and the Canon EF 100-400 F/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens handheld throughout the mid-morning.

The Juncos and American Goldfinches were quite abundant only intermittently being chased off by a Gray Squirrel or Blue Jay. My objective with these photos were to blowout the backgrounds as much as possible isolating the bird. A few of the birds cooperated by perching atop the feeder in the snow or on the hanger wire. I particularly like the images with the snow flakes on the bird's beak.

These images are processed in Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC for exposure, crop, and clarity/sharpness.

A Dark-Eyed Junco in the Winter light

Dark-Eyed Junco in Winter

January 24, 2016

While on holiday vacation, I photographed the above Dark-Eyed Junco visiting the bird feeder one morning. The light was low and, as can be seen by the background, there was no snow on the ground.

Photographed with the Canon 7D Mark II and the Canon EF 100-400MM F/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens handheld.
