Winter Blue Jays

January 31, 2016

I have added a new tool to my photo bag; the CamRanger wireless camera controller. While we have been mostly without snow this Winter in the New York Capital Region, the temperatures have been seasonal nonetheless. With the CamRanger, the camera can be placed outdoors within 150 - 300 feet of my location indoors, and then I can shoot from the comfort of my sofa using either the iPad or iPhone.

The images here were my first attempt at using the CamRanger. Photographed with the Canon 7D Mark II and the Canon EF 100-400 F/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens, the images here were all shot off of a tripod and remotely triggered with the CamRanger.

It has been dark and gloomy day in the Capital District. While working on the year-end clean-up of my Lightroom catalog I came across an image of some flowers in the mid-day Summer sun that I thought would work well as a background to one of my winter bird photos and add some color and warmth to the day. Above is the result of some quick editing.

I have been seeing a lot of woodpecker sign this Spring and every once in awhile I spook the Pileated Woodpeckers while walking the dog...there is always two. On this late sunny afternoon in early April, my son happened to notice that we had a visitor on the tree stump in the backyard. I managed to grab the camera and start taking a few photos through the glass window in our backdoor.

Capital District, however the sunlight is making it feel warmer than it is and and the mood is not as gray and glum. Spring is just around the corner!

An American Robin sits on an ice-covered branch.

Frozen Dinner

January 27, 2016

An American Robin sits amidst the crab apples and ice.

An American Robin clings to an ice-covered branch on my ornamental crab apple tree during a early-Winter ice/snow storm. A large number of robins had found the fruit and were gorging themselves on it during the storm.

Photographed hand held with the Canon 7D Mark II and the Canon EF 100-400 F/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens in a light freezing rain.

Have a great day!

American Robins in Ice and Snow

January 25, 2016

American Robins eating crab apples in an ice storm.

During the holiday break, the New York Capital Region received its first ice/snow event of the Winter. While I was walking past our front window, I noticed a flock of American Robins had descended on our ornamental crab tree and were gorging themselves on the fruit. I grabbed my camera and slowly made my way out the front door and maneuvered into position about fifteen feet away.

As a light sleet fell in fading light, I was able to capture a number of images with the Canon 7D Mark II and the Canon EF 100-400MM F/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens as the birds fed on the fruit. The above image was one of my favorites, more so because I did not realize I had captured it :)

A Dark-Eyed Junco in the Winter light

Dark-Eyed Junco in Winter

January 24, 2016

While on holiday vacation, I photographed the above Dark-Eyed Junco visiting the bird feeder one morning. The light was low and, as can be seen by the background, there was no snow on the ground.

Photographed with the Canon 7D Mark II and the Canon EF 100-400MM F/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens handheld.

San Diego and the Coronado Bridge

San Diego and the Coronado Bridge

January 23, 2016

The above image was photographed from my room in the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego, Ca. I was fortunate to be in my room on one of the rare moments when the sun was partially visible the week of Jan 4-8, 2016.

Shot handheld with the Fuji X100s, the image is a panorama composite of six images assembled in Adobe Lightroom CC.

Have a great day!

Hefner Hall - San Diego State University

San Diego State University

January 22, 2016

While attending the 2016 AIAA SciTech conference in San Diego, Ca., I had the pleasure of visiting the campus of San Diego State University and their engineering facilities as a guest of a long-time colleague and friend who is now a faculty member at the university. It was a cool and wet afternoon, so we dodged the rain by running from building to building and stopping for a few minutes to have coffee.

The above image is of the iconic Hepner Hall. The image below is of the more recently built Aztec Student Union building.

All images are shot with the Fuji X100s handheld and processed with Nik Software's Silver Efex Pro II.

Thanks to Xiaofeng Liu for being our gracious tour guide.

Have a great day!
